We all have definite rules at our schools. You may have spent time talking about norms, but what is the difference between rules and norms? Rules are imposed, while norms are developed and agreed upon by the group. Norms, however, are just one piece of building a classroom community.
Directions
Revisit the norms you created in the Getting Started section and discuss how they were developed.
As a team, or individually, create a poster (use chart paper & markers, Google Drawings, Canva, Poster My Wall) to teach your students what norms are and what they have to do with your community.
Establishing My Classroom Norms
Begin developing your plan for establishing norms with your students on your Community of Learners scaffold.
Include a link to your norms poster and describe how you will use it in your plan.
Add details for facilitating the process.
Describe the strategies you plan to use with your learners.
Reflect/Put Into Practice
Using your Community of Learners scaffold, respond to the questions below.
Consider and share
What would you like your classroom community to be like during the next school year?
How might establishing classroom norms help you reach your vision?
What steps might you need to follow to reach your goal?
What skills might your students need to meet these goals?
How will you know when you have reached your goal?
Connect and extend
Contact an experienced eMINTS teacher in the cohort you are joining.
Ask them how they established norms with their students last year and how they feel it impacted learning.
Ask how they plan to establish norms in the upcoming school year with their new students. Consider adding some of their tips and/or strategies to your plan.
